Roll-up sizes and artwork: the visible area and print files

· Piia

The size of a roll-up is chosen according to where it will be used. The most common is 85 x 200 cm, while the wider 100 x 200 cm suits a space where the graphic needs to be seen from a distance. The table model is A4 or A3 size. The graphic on the stands is produced from the customer's own artwork.

Below we describe the stands in this group and their sizes, how the size of the graphic is determined by the visible area, and what kind of file is needed for printing. At the end you will find the sources and answers to frequently asked questions.

Sizes and stands

The Roll-ups and banners group includes two roll-up models as well as an X-banner, a pop-up display stand, a banner and a fence banner. Besides size, they differ in how the graphic is held upright and how much space the stand takes up. The products are intended for situations where you want to display a campaign, a price list or a menu.

The price shown in the product details excludes VAT and includes full-colour print. The roll-up price is the price for the 85 x 200 cm size; the 100 x 200 cm size is priced in the quote. Both roll-up models are made in the EU.

Choosing a stand for the location

At an exhibition stand, a roll-up presents the graphic where visitors walk past. The narrow 85 x 200 cm model fits into a tight space as well, while the wider 100 x 200 cm carries a price list or a menu.

A banner works as a backdrop for a campaign point in a shop, and its size can be chosen freely. It suits a fence, a wall and the side of a building. A fence banner marks out an area when a queue or a field area needs to be defined. Frames can be joined side by side, so the marked area does not have to be short.

For an outdoor event, choose an option that withstands wind and weather: a mesh banner lets the wind through, a PVC banner withstands the weather, and the pop-up display stand suits both indoor and outdoor use.

When you need brochures or flags, each has its own group: Brochure stands and signs includes brochure holders for tables and walls, and Pennants and flags includes advertising flags and beach flags.

Visible area and the size of the graphic

The size of the printed graphic is not the same as the area that remains visible. The graphic rolls into the cassette, so the bottom edge is not fully visible when the stand is open. For this reason the size of the printed graphic depends on the stand: an 85 x 200 cm roll-up needs a graphic larger than this.

If the size of the graphic is already known, it is worth stating it in the quote request. That way the graphic does not have to be scaled down or redone because the chosen stand requires a printed graphic of a different size.

It is worth continuing the background colour from the bottom edge into the part that is hidden in the cassette, so that the colour area looks even when the stand is opened. Important texts should be placed near the top and away from the edges.

The proof shows where the graphic sits and at what size it will be printed. Also check the texts and numbers on the proof, for example the telephone number and the web address. You will receive a print proof for approval before production. Production starts once the proof has been approved.

File and colours

Printing a full graphic requires print-ready artwork, that is, a file in the correct size that goes straight to print. If only a logo is printed, a logo file is enough.

A vector file can be scaled up or down to any size without the edges becoming blurred. Common vector formats are AI, EPS, SVG and PDF. In a PDF file, texts are converted to outlines so that the fonts stay the same.

PNG and JPG files consist of pixels. They can be used at most at the size in which they were created. Send the largest file available; the resolution of the image is checked before production.

The same vector file can be used on several stands and on other printed products as well. The only limit is the size at which the graphic is printed on each product.

The roll-up graphic is printed in full colour from your own artwork. If the colours have a precise meaning, PMS colour codes define the shade unambiguously. Judged on screen, a colour can look different on different devices.

File formats, checking a vector logo and PMS colours are covered in the guide Logo and artwork.

The customer is responsible for the rights to the artwork to be printed. Printing another company's logo, photograph or illustration requires the permission of its owner. It is advisable to confirm the permission in writing before ordering.

What to include in the quote request

An order usually proceeds as follows:

Up to three files can be attached to a quote request, and each file may be up to 10 MB. The accepted attachment formats are PDF, AI, EPS, SVG, PNG and JPG. If there are several attachments, state in your message which file belongs to which product.

Some of the products in this group are made to order. The lead time for made-to-order products is usually about 4 weeks from approval of the proof. The exact lead time is given in the quote.

Exhibition products are covered in more detail in the guide Promotional products for exhibitions.

The roll-up is also one of the products used in election campaigns. The timing of orders for products carrying a candidate number is covered in the article Campaign products for candidates: what to order and when.

Frequently asked questions

What does the size of the graphic mean on a roll-up?

The printed graphic is larger than the visible area, because the bottom edge of the graphic stays hidden in the cassette. Important texts should be kept within the visible area.

What image resolution is sufficient for a roll-up?

A vector file can be used at any size. A pixel image must have sufficient resolution for the size at which it is printed, and the largest file available should be sent. The resolution is checked before production.

Can the roll-up graphic be sent as a JPG or PNG file?

Yes, if the image is large enough. Both are pixel images, so they cannot be enlarged without the edges becoming blurred. A vector file such as AI, EPS, SVG or PDF works at any size.

Is there a table model of the roll-up?

Yes. The table model is A4 or A3 size and suits a counter or reception desk.

Is a roll-up suitable for outdoor use?

For outdoor use, a banner or a pop-up display stand from the same group is a better choice. Mesh fabric lets the wind through, and PVC withstands the weather.
